Affect and Artifice in Latin America
I will be presenting the talk “Affect and Artifice in Latin America” on April 17th (Friday) at 6:30 PM at King Juan Center/Center for Latin American and Caribbean Stidies (CLACS) at New York University (70 Washington Square S) inside “The Form of Affect Conference” schedule (https://theformofaffect.wordpress.com/) . Part of a broader, ongoing study called "Af...fect, Relationships and Encounters," this talk, entitled "Affect and Artifice in Latin America," maps out questions and doubts more strictly related to some theoretical issues and terms that underpin affect and queer studies. The first part focuses on Deluzian theorists, most notably on Deleuze and Guattari's work What is Philosophy? (Qu'est-ce que la philosophie? ). It deals with how the concept of affect found in these theorists' works can be approached through a formal discussion of cinematic staging. Secondly, I wish to suggest how Latin American theoretical critical production can enter into closer dialogue between affect and queer studies, particularly with regard to artifice. This section borrows from Silviano Santiago, Sylvia Molloy, Néstor Perlongher and Roberto Echavarren. The last segment of my talk is an analysis of director Karim Aïnouz's 2002 film Madame Satã considered from intersections between affect, queer studies and artifice.
