Arena: Bob Dylan at Newport Night
The centrepiece of the BBC4's evening of special programmes is Murray Lerner's documentary The Other Side of the Mirror - Bob Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival. Director Lerner shot the footage himself in the years 1963-5 and most of it has never been seen on television before.
The period was a crucial one for Dylan as he changed from folky crowd pleaser to a challenging exponent of electric rock. Steve Smith looks at what new light the discovered material sheds on the singer/songwriter and at his current influence on the music scene - from Mark Ronson remixes to The Imagined Village compilation.
Next week, as part of our London Film Festival, Newsnight Review will be looking at Todd Haynes film I'm Not There, recently given approval by Dylan, which portrays different points of the singer's life through different actors from Christian Bale and Richard Gere to Cate Blanchett.
