ART Competition in support of academic freedom -CARA and the ARTS


Poster attached. We were allowed by Schrank to use his cartoon which is great. I just wondered having seen your links with women artists whether any might be interested in contributing pieces on the theme of academic freedom. A long shot, but it will be both an awareness raising event and a fundraiser and a number of established artists are being invited to contribute an A5 piece for the online auction. Others (Maggi Hambling, Marcelle Hanselaar) are contributing work to be auctioned live in late November, and I also have commitments from political cartoonists to do pieces on the theme also for sale at the live auction.

El padre de la primera píldora anticonceptiva, el químico austríaco Carl Djerassi, sube jovial a sus 85 años las escaleras de un hotel de Vigo, ayudado de un bastón. Es la primera vez que visita la ciudad, para recoger el premio Alecrín 2009 que le otorga la asociación feminista en reconocimiento por el invento que en 1951 dio libertad y poder a la mujer sobre su maternidad y separó el acto sexual de la reproducción. Le acompaña su hija. Dice que adquirió su feminismo intelectual «en la cama» con su esposa ya fallecida, tras una discusión seria sobre el poder social que tenía antes el hombre. A three-judge panel convicted him for ordering a military death squad to carry out two massacres that killed 25 people during his 1990-2000 rule, when he was battling guerrillas. Nearly 70,000 people died in two decades of conflict in the Andean country. Fujimori once enjoyed overwhelming popularity for taming economic chaos and defeating the Maoist insurgency known as the Shining Path, but a corruption scandal sank his government in 2000 and he fled to exile in Japan.
