Haidar's 26th day of hunger strike
Three Nobel laureates and hundreds of personalities from the world of culture on Thursday in Madrid have urged King Juan Carlos of Spain to intercede with Morocco to end the "tragic agony" of the Sahrawi human rights activist on a hunger strike for 26 days at the airport of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) to demand her return to Western Sahara.
In a letter to the Spanish king, signatories from 19 countries highlighted the "urgency" and "need" to save the life of Aminatou Haidar, known for her human rights activism, which is "on the verge of a dramatic denouement."
"We would like to request an explicit intervention from the Royal House of Spain with the Moroccan monarch," they wrote in a letter presented at a meeting held at the Circle of Fine Arts in the Spanish capital.
