Madrid (Spain)- Three Nobel laureates and hundreds of personalities from the world of culture on Thursday in Madrid have urged King Juan Carlos of Spain to intercede with Morocco

  • Three Nobel laureates and hundreds of personalities from the world of culture on Thursday in Madrid have urged King Juan Carlos of Spain to intercede with Morocco to end the "tragic agony" of the Sahrawi human rights activist on a hunger strike for 26 days at the airport of Lanzarote (Canary Islands) to demand her return to Western Sahara.





  • In a letter to the Spanish king, signatories from 19 countries highlighted the "urgency" and "need" to save the life of Aminatou Haidar, known for her human rights activism, which is "on the verge of a dramatic denouement."





  • "We would like to request an explicit intervention from the Royal House of Spain with the Moroccan monarch," they wrote in a letter presented at a meeting held at the Circle of Fine Arts in the Spanish capital.

A three-judge panel convicted him for ordering a military death squad to carry out two massacres that killed 25 people during his 1990-2000 rule, when he was battling guerrillas. Nearly 70,000 people died in two decades of conflict in the Andean country. Fujimori once enjoyed overwhelming popularity for taming economic chaos and defeating the Maoist insurgency known as the Shining Path, but a corruption scandal sank his government in 2000 and he fled to exile in Japan.
