CRITIC REVIEWS FOR 1976

An invaluable demonstration of feminine revolutionary cinema.

1976 pays powerful homage to this crucial period in Chile’s history. Martelli’s sure-handed direction makes impressive use of vibrant visuals, evocative sound design, and a meticulously detailed setting.

From Chile, Manuela Martelli’s 1976 is the kind of elliptical political drama in which Latin cinema excels, containing its threat in the corners or recesses of the action, slowly building an atmosphere of tension and fear.

An edge-of-your-seat thriller that flawlessly captures the look and feel of its setting while maintaining taut suspense throughout, 1976 marks a bold debut from Manuela Martelli.

A tense political thriller which transports its lead through a gamut of emotions and increasingly perilous situations.

Martelli’s unsettling visual language even manages to make a weeping wound look like a watercolour on a fleshy canvas.

An honest look at the indifference imposed towards repressed societies. [Full review in Spanish]

Martelli carefully crafts an air of almost casual dread.

[1976] is equal parts character study and taut political drama... There is no payoff, no cathartic visualisation of fear, only a persistent sense of dread that never fully dissipates.

The blend of character study, Hitchcockian intrigue and an excellent central performance from Aline Kuppenheim makes for a tensely involving tale with strong arthouse potential.

When information is passed from one character to another at great personal cost, every expression and every intricate detail [director Manuela] Martelli and crew invest in “1976” feels invaluable.
