Authorities in DR Congo have arrested an army officer over a mass rape of civilians in the east of the country on 1 January, officials and the UN say.
Lt Col Kibibi Mutware is accused of leading the rape of more than 50 women in Fizi, in South Kivu province.

A three-judge panel convicted him for ordering a military death squad to carry out two massacres that killed 25 people during his 1990-2000 rule, when he was battling guerrillas. Nearly 70,000 people died in two decades of conflict in the Andean country. Fujimori once enjoyed overwhelming popularity for taming economic chaos and defeating the Maoist insurgency known as the Shining Path, but a corruption scandal sank his government in 2000 and he fled to exile in Japan.
